The Belt of Truth: Psalm 119:81-96

Aug 9, 2024    Pastor Andrew Belt

Psalm 119 is the great Psalm on God’s Word. We could say it is the Psalm of Psalms.

It is an acrostic poem, meaning each line of text goes through the Hebrew alphabet. Each letter in the alphabet gets 8 verses before the next letter is used. In this extreme way, this Psalm is about God’s Word from A-Z.

God’s Word is also expressed in 8 ways in the psalm with different words and meanings. Law,, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, rules, word, and promises.

Through the Psalm, the composer shows a desire to walk through this life living on God’s path. So much imagery in this psalm depicts a winding round and garden jungle that we must navigate. Each word for “Word” helps gets after how God’s Word helps us go through this life and how God goes with us.

As the psalmist desires to live God’s truth, he petitions God to help him. The psalm begins by stating the blessing of walking on God’s ways, and ends with asking God to save him for he has wandered away like a sheep.

This psalm, which praises the Word of God, is praise to Jesus. The Word made flesh.
