For the Rest of Your Life
A little girl had been trying for months to learn the art of tying her shoes. She finally grasped the knack and was able to do it by herself. Her parents expected the child to be delighted but were surprised by her disappointment. Her father asked why she was crying. She sobbed, "I just learned how to tie my shoes." He said, "That’s wonderful, Honey, but why are you crying?" She replied, "Because now I’ll have to do it all by myself for the rest of my life."
Perhaps you remember when you learned to tie your shoes! It’s a necessary part of growing up, of course, and now when my son, Andrew, and I get ready for hiking, getting our footgear on and tied is exciting, because it means we’re ready to go! It’s a good thing to tie one’s shoes! You can quote me on that.
With Confirmation being done and Easter now over and summer approaching, it’s good to remember that meeting together in worship is a “for-the-rest-of-your-life” kind of thing. The old, sinful self might bemoan this fact, but the new person in Jesus Christ rejoices within you to get to partake of the means of grace in regular, weekly worship!
Come to think of it, the little girl in that story was especially sad, not because she had to tie her shoes, but rather because she had to do it all by herself. This calls to mind the truth that worship is also joyful because it’s a “we-get-to-do-it-together” kind of thing!
May God bless us as we rejoice for ALL the blessings that come from worshipping together!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Daryn
