The Belt of Truth: Psalm 89:1-18

Mar 4, 2024    Pastor Andrew Belt

The final psalm in Boom 3, Psalm 89, reads like an epitaph/eulogy after the grave was sealed in darkness from Psalm 88.

It is a song that recalls all that God has done in history. From creation, to the Exodus, to even the days of Deborah, God has worked his salvation for his people. The key event in this psalm is mirrored in the opening and the end. The promise to David from 2 Samuel 7. But considering the death of the king and the exile of God’s people. We are left to wonder: will he continue?

There is no bitterness here, but rather somber praise in God. Steadfast love and faithfulness ring out together like a gong 7 times in this psalm to drive home the hope that God will reverse the present disaster.

From praising God for his steadfast love, to ending on a sorrowful note that God seems done with his promises. This psalm is like walking away from the tomb of Jesus at on Good Friday to the tune of the Emmaus disciples who said to the hidden risen Christ. “We had hoped…”

Psalm 89 is the final note of death that has us hope for the resurrection of Christ to come.
