The Belt of Truth: Psalm 66

Nov 10, 2023    Pastor Andrew Belt

Psalm 66 is a psalm that fits into psalms 67-68 as well. These form a unit and the church has always associated and connected them to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. With many Greek and Latin manuscripts of Psalm 66 stating that this is a psalm of the resurrection. And this psalm is quoted and alluded to during the Great Vigil of Easter/Pascha

So with the resurrection of Christ in mind, we see that this psalm is praising God for his deeds. Several deeds are referenced, especially the bringing out of Israel from Egypt and the crossing of the Jordan River. The language is sync together with the concept of dry land, a term used in the Old Testament to carry the freight of the concept of the New Creation.

Jesus has stepped into that New Creation and because he is alive, we too shall live and are connected to the land of the living. So we too sing, even as we suffer. Using the idea of water and fire as where God’s people praise also links us to Exodus 15 and Revelation 15.

So we pray to God knowing that he hears when we call. And that he has not removed his steadfast love from us.
