The Belt of Truth: Psalm 69:16-36

Nov 27, 2023    Pastor Andrew Belt

Psalm 69 continues the cry of Jesus Christ on the cross. As he bears our sin and agony, he asks for God’s steadfast love to be shown to him.

Moments of Christ’s passion of being forsaken by his disciples, being offered sour wine are all mentioned in this psalm. Even of Judas’ betrayal that is referenced in Acts 1 is quoted here showing that Psalm 69 spoke well in the Christian Church in the days following Christ.

And then he turns to his enemies and prays to the Father that he deal with those that dishonor him. He speaks of having them be excluded. It could very well be that the thief on the cross, aware of these words and seeing the events unfold before him in real time begged for Christ’s mercy having seen from this psalm the result.

Indeed after this, Christ praying this psalm is sure of the vindication, of resurrection and ascension. And those who are reckoned righteous by Christ will inherit the land, for the meek shall inherit the earth with Christ with whom they praise his name.
