The Belt of Truth: Psalm 110

Jun 17, 2024    Pastor Andrew Belt

Psalm 110 gives us a beautiful description of everything the New Testament will reveal about the Lord Jesus Christ who in this psalm is called David’s Lord.

Psalm 110 is the most quoted psalm in the New Testament, quoted directly at least 17 times and alluded to many more. This tells us that not the first Christians, psalm 110 was a favorite psalm.

In it, David’s Lord, Jesus Christ, is crowned with dominion and honor being placed at God’s right hand. This enthronement is not the end but the beginning of everything.

As the reigning Lord, God and his Messiah set out to set things right and to rule over all the earth admist God’s enemies and to create a people who belong to this King.

God even swears that this King will be a priest forever after Melchizedek, a mysterious figure from Genesis who was priest to God and who blessed Abraham, Jesus is a priest like him and not a Levitical priest, which the book of Hebrews loves to tell us.

This psalm ends with the King routing his enemies but pausing to refresh himself, suggesting that it is an opportunity to join with him and find rest with this king before he resumes the final conquest of his scattered enemies.
