The Belt of Truth: Psalm 118:14-29

Jul 19, 2024    Pastor Andrew Belt

The final Egyptian Hallel Psalm, Psalm 118, is a landmark Psalm in the Church.

This Psalm is used by Jesus during Holy Week to point to himself as the subject of the psalm, especially the stone that the builders rejected.

But in Psalm 118, an exhortation to praise God for his steadfast love is given. Then a lone voice speaks of affliction and suffering, but leans upon the LORD alone for his help.

As the Psalm moves ahead, we hear many lines that are used in the liturgy or the church, such as, “this is the day which the Lord has made.” This shows that this psalm points to the victory of Christ by his cross and death.

The steadfast love of the Lord is experienced by Jesus when his Father delivers him from death. And like Jesus, we join with him in his suffering and victory on this day.
